Second Homes and Social Sustainability of Local Communities in Croatia
Resumen
Second home use, i.e. occasional use of dwellings for vacation and recreation is a global social phenomenon with a long tradition in Europe. This type of dwelling is deeply rooted in the Croatian society as well. A more intense expansion of this phenomenon in Croatia started in the late 1960s, and the Census data shows that we have continuous rise in the number of second homes for the last 50 years. As a result, there are a significant number of municipalities with more second homes then permanently occupied dwellings which indicates that this phenomenon has become important factor of a sociospatial transformation of settlements, especially in our coastal region. In this presentation we will explore two aspects of second home phenomenon in Croatia. First, I will refer to the impact of second home growth on host areas and show results of the analysis of the relationship of second home development and local socio-economic development in Croatia. After that, I will focus on emp irical insights from our case studies on the mechanism of involvement of second home users in (re)creation of their place of temporary living, particularly into importance of local social relations for participation in local development planning.
