Resumen
We present a dynamic model of competing destinations to study the agglomeration and dispersion forces driving long-run geographical distribution of tourism. The relative strength of these forces determines if tourism is agglomerated in a destination or it is more disperse. Economies of scale in tourism industry favor the agglomeration whereas the tourists preference for the local touristic attractions and local services boosts tourism dispersion. If returns to scale approach to constant and tourists do not appreciate the local good, the interaction between the two destinations disappears and our model converges to the well known Tourism Area Life Cycle model. Contrary, if destinations interact and the price sensitivity of tourists is low enough to compensate the economies of scale that induce firms to agglomerate, an even distribution of tourism is stable, otherwise tourism tend to agglomerate. The tourism share is higher in the nicer or larger destination or in the region with lower prices. If tourism restrictions are imposed (as the ones applied during the pandemic in 2021 or those derived by the war in Ukraine) tourism reallocates as we prove in two extensions of the baseline model which are validated with the available real data.
