Estará a cargo de María Nela Seijas (Universidad de la República, Uruguay) on un trabajo titulado A literature review on the economic impact of museum tourism (la presentación se realizará en español).

Resumen
Research on the economic impact of museum tourism originated in the field of economics of the arts, leading ultimately to the seminal work in museum economics (Peacock & Godfrey, 1974), which for the first time contextualized museums as economic agents. Museums are recognized as cultural and tourist destinations that generate an economic impact. UNWTO (2018) estimates the proportion of cultural tourists based on international arrivals to be over 39%. The aim of this article is to review the state-of-the-art scientific research published globally which investigated the relationship between museum tourism and economic development, as well as their methodological approach, through the assessment of peer-reviewed scientific journals, books, and conference proceedings indexed in the largest databases. This literature review is to be complemented with a bibliometric analysis. This review is comprehensive of 123 scientific studies, corresponding to the period 1969-2023, which comprise stated and revealed preference methodologies, short-term economic impact studies and a variety of other methodologies aimed at measuring the economic impact of museum tourism at the local, regional and country levels. Main findings point out to the positive externalities of museum tourism in enhancing economic activity, either from a short-term or long-term approach, using macroeconomic or microeconomic approaches. Besides, due to their significant role in local reactivation, some big museums have been conceived within urban regeneration plans. Findings prove to be useful for museum administrators, policymakers and sponsors in general in order to obtain the maximum economic impact of museum tourism, determining the worthiness of the financial support received.
